The biopharmaceutical company PROMOMED has applied for registration of a drug based on epinephrine (adrenaline) in a unique form of a single-use autoinjector. The drug is intended for emergency care of patients in case of severe life-threatening allergic reaction.
The prototype was presented to the professional community at the First Interregional Congress on Allergology and Immunology by Badma Bashankaev, a Russian surgeon, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, and a member of the General Council of the United Russia Party. Badma Bashankaev noted that the introduction of the adrenaline autoinjector in Russia is aimed at solving the specific problem of patients for whom timely administration of the drug can be a life-saving factor.
Currently, in Russia, epinephrine preparations are available only in ampoules, which are used in medical institutions or by ambulance specialists. According to data Studies have shown that patients are provided with adrenaline for pre-medical care at less than 30%.
"Under conditions of stress and rapid development of anaphylaxis, opening the ampoule, selecting the right dose, and performing the injection itself require additional time, which can lead to disastrous consequences. The availability of domestic autoinjectors with adrenaline radically changes approaches to the relief of life-threatening conditions. The device already contains the required dose, the injector mechanism is designed so that the injection can be done even through clothing, and the application itself does not require special medical skills. We sought to remove the barrier of fear of complex medical manipulation by providing wide access to a reliable tool for use in emergency cases. Our goal is to make sure that an ambulance is literally always at hand."
During the development of the new product, PROMOMED worked closely with doctors and patient organizations, in particular with the Association of Allergy Sufferers and Atopics of Russia. For several years now, the Association, together with doctors, has been conducting training schools for patients and their families, where people are taught free of charge to recognize a severe allergic reaction and act before an ambulance arrives.
Anaphylaxis is a life—threatening condition that requires the immediate administration of adrenaline. More than 60% of all cases of severe allergic reactions I have to for children and teenagers under the age of 18.
