Russian pharmaceutical companies have begun scientific research on the creation of drugs for "monkey pox," said Peter Bely, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Promomed Group, on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

"Scientific work by our pharmaceutical companies is already underway, and we already see several promising molecules that will be effective for treatment. Not for prevention, but for the treatment of smallpox, which, as you know, used to be an incurable disease," he said.

According to Bely, "monkey pox" is not recognized by WHO as a global threat. In addition, the majority of the adult population has been vaccinated against common human smallpox, and this vaccine is effective against smallpox in monkeys. So far, we are talking about a rare endemic local disease, which is likely to affect not a very large number of people and is unlikely to develop into a pandemic, he added.

The number of confirmed cases of infection with "monkey pox" outside the endemic countries of Africa has exceeded 1,500 people. The most infected people are currently registered in the UK (470), followed by Spain (259) and Germany (229) in second and third places. In total, 1,380 cases occur in European countries. On June 15, it was reported that the first case of "monkey pox" had been detected in Georgia.

No cases of the disease have been reported in Russia. On June 8, during a visit to Tashkent, Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko said that drugs for the treatment of smallpox, as well as a new vaccine for its prevention, are already being tested.

Earlier in June, the head of WHO, Theodore Adam Ghebreyesus, said that the organization plans to change the name of the monkey pox virus, its offshoots and the disease it causes. According to the recommendations of the organization, names of animals, geographical regions, human names, cultural references and other concepts should not be used in the terminology of infections.
