MOSCOW, December 27. /tass/. The Biochemist plant (part of the PROMOMED group of companies) in Mordovia has increased production of the domestic coronavirus drug Areplivir 10 times since September, to one million packages per month, Andrey Mladentsev, chief Executive Officer of Promomed, told TASS on Sunday.

"We have reached the target capacity for the production of Areplivir and can produce one million packages per month. In September, when we started, the production volume did not exceed 100 thousand packages per month. Thus, we were able to scale production 10 times in three months. This is a labor feat of the specialists who work at Biochemistry," said Mladentsev.

According to him, now virtually the entire volume of the drug is sent to the regions at the request of the ministries of health of the subjects, it is not easy to buy Areplivir in pharmacies - it ends quickly, and due to the shortage of the drug in the domestic market, the company refused to export supplies. Mladentsev clarified that, taking into account the increase in production volumes, PROMOMED plans to continue supplying the drug to the regions, then to commercial pharmacies, and only after that, approximately in the second quarter of 2021, it will be possible to export Areplivir.

Infants clarified that applications are received from many countries. "The list of interested countries includes almost all countries, starting from Bangladesh and ending with Chile and Peru. Only the USA, Canada, China and India are not on this list," the executive director noted, adding that applications from other countries are significantly more expensive, but the company's priority is Russian citizens.

Earlier, the head of Promomed told TASS that Areplivir helps the patient cope with the disease at an early stage and avoid severe consequences. The drug is based on the active ingredient favipiravir, which blocks the reproduction of the virus in the human cell and thereby prevents the spread of infection in the body. According to the results of clinical studies, the drug has a low toxic load, 80% of people recover on monotherapy, without concomitant medications.

"As for the price, the maximum selling price for the drug is regulated by the state, now we are working at the limit of profitability and we understand that this is not the time to earn money, we have a very important task ahead of us - to provide the drug to the population of the country," said Andrey Mladentsev.

He also said that Biochemist plans to increase production of other drugs used in the treatment of coronavirus, including antibiotics, which are currently in short supply on the market. "There is a shortage of antibiotics in pharmacies, and there is a problem with the availability of substances and raw materials all over the world. For some components for the production of drugs, you have to sign up for a queue that will be suitable in the summer. Our company is a full-cycle one, we synthesize substances at Biochemistry," noted Mladentsev.

The drug "Areplivir" with the active ingredient "Favipiravir" was approved for use by the Russian Ministry of Health at the end of June. The drug is produced at the Biochemist plant in Saransk.
